Flag Raising for World Federation of the Deaf
Monday, September 23 at 12:00 pm to Monday, September 23, 2024 at 12:00 am
- Tbd event
The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) was established on September 23, 1951. It is dedicated to uplifting human rights and ensuring the full and equal participation of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing people in all areas of society, regardless of their country, race, religion, or gender. The WFD aims to foster greater understanding of the vibrant people who make up the world-wide Deaf community and to share their languages with the world. The WFD flag, depicting five fingers on a blue background, symbolizes the strong connections between Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing people around the globe, as well as the use of sign languages, and the objectives of the WFD.
During the International Week of the Deaf (always the last full week of September), organizations all over the world will be celebrating the beauty of Deaf culture and the multitude of sign languages it has created. On September 23, the WFD flag will be raised on Carleton campus at the flag pole on Library Road by the Pride Crosswalk @ 12 noon.
The flag will also be raised at Parliament Hill @ 3:30 p.m. We invite you to join us in marking this very special moment in Deaf history.
ASL-English interpretation is present.
