Alex Myers

Contract Instructor (CCDP)

“With great power comes great responsibility” someone once said. My goal is humble: inspire others to excel, innovate and to better communicate their complex ideas in simpler words and images. While an academic at heart, I have found a most rewarding path in industry and government. My past 20 years or more have seen me write advertising copy for innovative pharmaceuticals and medical devices for several multinational companies. During that time, I also enjoyed promoting innovative science and technologies for the National Research Council, National Defence, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans as well as the Canadian Space Agency (think RADARSAT, NEOSSat and DEXTRE, the space bot). For Canada’s Foreign Affairs, I promoted Canada, and our many well world-ranked universities, as an international destination for education. My work with Foreign Affairs had me develop many culturally-differentiated promotional materials with the insights of talented International Trade Commissioners posted abroad. That work exposed me to many cultural worlds, including India, Brazil, Russia, Ukraine, China, Morocco and so many more amazing places. This promotional work saw me collaborate with UBC, U of Toronto, Carleton, l’Université de Montréal and many more of our 98 quality Canadian universities. Students represent the future, and I can only hope that my teachings will inspire them to better communicate with each other. Ultimately, it is my hope that our students will better develop technologies that will make our planet a better place to live.
