Professor and Program Coordinator

I am a full-time faculty at Algonquin College, where I teach in the English for Academic Purposes program and coordinate the Teachers of English as a Second/Foreign Language program. I hold the OCELT accreditation from TESL Ontario, an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from York University, and a Ph.D. in ALDS from Carleton.

I have been an Adult ESL teacher in Canada and internationally, having taught in various contexts and programs, including the private sector, LINC, and college- and university-based English for Academic Purposes (EAP). It is my experience in EAP over the past 20 years that has brought me to Carleton, where I just completed, with the help of my brilliant thesis committee headed by Dr. Guillaume Gentil, my doctoral project on the effect of teaching complex noun phrases on EAP students’ reading comprehension. My doctoral study is published in System, TESL Canada Journal, and Canadian Journal of Applied Linguistics.

Prior to this, I did research on first language attrition, bilingual and heritage language education, and teacher training in online synchronous environments, published in Language Learning and Technology, Canadian Journal of Applied Linguistics, International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, and Journal for the Education of the Gifted. In addition to teaching EAP, I am conducting research on the use of AI-based chatbots for teaching speaking in EAP.
