Yoichi Mukai (MA ALDS/14)

University Professor (Vancouver Island University)
- MA (ALDS)/14
My time in SLaLS provided me with strong preparation to pursue my academic career further. This involved understanding the theoretical considerations of my research interests and gaining valuable hands-on experience. My doctoral study was built on the insights, knowledge, and research skills acquired as a graduate student at SLaLS and as a research assistant for my supervisor, Dr. David Wood. Dr. Wood was not only a great mentor as a researcher but also as an educator.
I am currently working as a professor and am responsible for the Japanese and linguistics programs in the Modern Languages Studies Department at Vancouver Island University. I am also the director of the Linguistic Research Laboratory (https://ah.viu.ca/lrl). I am interested in a range of data-driven research, with a focus on the empirical study of language through experimentation. My primary research interest lies in the underlying mechanisms of speech communication. Although speech is highly variable, speakers and listeners seem to communicate with ease. It is intriguing to study how the production of speech varies and how listeners cope with such variability (https://yoichimukai.rbind.io).
