Arabic |
BrittanySinging in: Arabic Brittany grew up in a Dutch-Canadian community and spent the majority of her life in Ontario. She is currently in her final year of Film and Religious studies at Carleton University. Last summer, she went on a six-week cultural exchange to Morocco. Nothing could have prepared her for the culture-shock of not being able to speak in a foreign country. Yet despite her frustration, she made some incredible friends. Her friends also struggled to translate for her the thoughts they could only express in their heart-language. Brittany began learning Arabic at Carleton this year. Music and poetry have revealed to her the beauty of the Arabic language, specifically the poet Khalil Gibran and the Tunisian folk band, Yuma. She now longs for the country she once felt helplessly lost in and thinks often of her friends. One day she hopes to return and show them all she’s learned. |

Yi “Charlotte” LiuSinging in: English Hobby: Singing and dancing. I’m a first year international student from China who loves to listen to other people’s stories. I enjoy the feeling when people share their things with me, ask me what do I think or want me to give some ideas. And I feel so willing to tell them what I feel and my advice. It’s so fun to listen to everybody’s stories and know it like I was there at that time. Sometimes my friends feel sad because of school or relationships, I’ll be there to help them. Because I think life isn’t just about yourself, it’s related to everyone you know. Moreover, the thing we should do is to care about the people who loves you. And happiness is the only thing we always want. Therefore, if anything makes you feel lose, just let it go and be yourself to fight it. |

QuinnSinging in: French Canadian born and raised, Quinn French is a student of languages, currently in his third year of an Honours French degree at Carleton, with minor studies in both German and Italian, as well as an ongoing education in Japanese and Spanish. He has plans to continue his pursuit of languages with Mandarin, Arabic, Russian and Swedish. It’s his hope to use these skills to travel as an interpreter, breaking down language barriers on every continent. His only regret is his inability to find an institution that teaches fluent Penguin. A veteran songwriter and performer of Linguavision 2016, Quinn has been following his personal passion of singing and songwriting over the past year, alongside the continued development of his instrumental abilities on both the guitar and piano. Gaining experience at open mic nights and performing his music at select event venues around Ottawa, Quinn has built a strong basis in the Indie and alternative rock genres with his simple acoustic accompaniment to heartfelt vocals rooted in personal and emotional lyrics. With a modest album of original songs completely written and tested by live audiences across Eastern Ontario, Quinn is currently building his own production studio, and growing a network of local artists and producers. |

LiamSinging in: German Some weird, eccentric, washed up punk, who’s barely in his 20’s and the frontman for the local Ottawa band XiL (pronounced Exile). He believes that all art is meaningless, and that the music and painting or literature and film, present themselves as the sweet ironies of life. Because how can something that means nothing, say everything? He while writing this bio, switching from third person to a much more introspective first person says this, “I regularly think that I’m like a haiku. Full of arbitrary rules, that once it has been completed, has completely lost all meaning. I think I’m seven, and seven is two from nine, why can’t I be nine? It is constricted, it causes too much friction, and it’s abrasively bad.” Lastly, he would like to take this opportunity to say one more thing… “Hey mom! I’m in a description!” That is all. |
RileySinging in: German Riley is a second year student in the Bachelor of Communication and Media Studies. Riley has been involved with music since a young age, starting piano lessons at age four, a member of world renowned Cantare Children’s Choir for many years, and also a section leader of her marching band for three years. Riley is happiest when outdoors, working with others, or when anything has to do with Broadway or New York City. |

MarianaSinging in: Italian I was born in Canada, and when I was two and a half years old I moved to Brazil with my parents. In May 2016, 17 years old, I moved back to Canada to study Cognitive Science at Carleton. I am a first year student and currently living with my Italian grandparents. Therefore, I happen to be studying a new language: Italian. I have a passion for music since I was a little girl. Singing is my favorite hobby. Whenever I begin, I cannot stop. No matter how old I get, it is something that will always be a great part of me. We can set ourselves free with music, explore each feeling within its depth. It is an endless field: there are no limits for creativity. It is a way of transmitting our emotions, which requires amazing human capabilities and dedication. It is one of the most rewarding fields: for who listens and for who creates it. It is the language of the soul, of love, it is the most pleasing sound of life. |
TerezaSinging in: Italian Hello, my name is Tereza Cerqueira, I am a 4th year Psychology student here at Carleton. I have been taking Italian as an elective since September, 2016 and I thoroughly enjoy it. I decided to learn Italian because one of my favorite musicians; Josh Groban, sings in Italian and I want to eventually understand the meaning of his music. I am participating in Linguavision because I love to sing and perform and it has been a while since I have performed in front of an audience. I’m really excited about this enriching experience. |

His inspirations come from Japanese music groups SCANDAL, OneOkRock, Radwimps, Super Beaver, My First Story, and Sekai No Owari. Jesse hopes to share a brief piece of Japanese culture through the song he will be performing. S & ASinging in: Japanese S&A is a duo unit composed of SETH and Alexeo. Their musical journey began when they discovered their mutual interest in Japanese and Korean music. S&A came together as a unit with the hopes of sharing often overlooked genres of music with the world. Their respective backgrounds, while compatible, differ in a way that complements what the other lacks and helps push them to evolve as performers. Alexeo is the dancer of the group. She has been learning dance for the past few years, including her specialty, Hip Hop and Street dance, alongside a bit of Ballet. S&A has given her the opportunity to showcase her skills as a choreographer for the first time. Alexeo hopes to express her passion for both singing, dancing, and Japanese. After spending several years in concert band, Alexeo is ready to take the stage again. SETH is the composer/arranger for the group. An established name in Ottawa’s Japanese music scene, he has been promoting the music and language he loves in the Ottawa community for several years, be it through tactfully inserted Japanese verse in the experimental rock band Itari Ascend or through his Japanese Pop/Rock solo work. SETH makes his comeback to Linguavision under S&A to showcase a new and exciting brand of J-Pop performance. A performance he hopes will captivate and inspire an audience of future ambassadors for multi-lingual music appreciation in Canada and worldwide. |

Portuguese |
MeganSinging in: Portuguese Meg is pursuing a Master’s in International Affairs at Carleton, specializing in Project Management and African Studies. Given NPSIA’s language requirement, Meg jumped at the opportunity to finally learn Brazilian Portuguese and has taken two beginner classes so far. Although she is very much an amateur when it comes to singing, Linguavision was the perfect push she needed to practice her pronunciation and do something truly terrifying. Her hope is that learning Portuguese will help her write her Master’s research paper on maternal health challenges in Mozambique- and prepare her to meet her (future) in-laws this Christmas. |
Spanish |
AprilSinging in: Spanish My name is April Jereza, I am in my 5th year at Carleton. I will be graduating (I hope) in June with a Bachelor of Commerce with a concentration in finance. Although I am in Finance, it is not my passion. Every since I was young my passion was always singing and performing, I have had the privilege to play the lead roles in 5 musical productions, most notably Les Miserables and Annie. I needed one more elective to graduate so I decided to take Spanish to fuel my love for languages. I was so happy to hear of Linguavision as it allowed me to sign up for a singing competition and provide me with a creative outlet. |
JuliaSinging in: Spanish Julia is a transfer student who graduated from Canadore College as a Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor and is now pursuing her degree at Carleton University in Psychology. Originally from Sudbury, Ontario, she’s already got years of experience touring with Evolutionary Band, and has had performances with The Bluez Brotherz as a trumpet and trombone player. This will be her debut as both a vocalist and a pianist. She’s always thought about how powerful music is in it’s ability to evoke strong emotions that allow people to remember fond memories, give them goosebumps, and perhaps even tear up. As a lover and admirer of both music and travelling, learning Italian and Spanish at Carleton has helped emphasized just how unbelievably beautiful the world is. Her selected song is a Spanish Gospel rendition of Adele’s Hello, originally performed by Anagrace. Religion plays an important role in Hispanic and Latin American culture, and she hopes to share such an important part of their culture with all of you at LinguaVision 2017. |
RanaSinging in: Spanish My name is Rana Hammoud and I am so passionate about music and the arts. My motto in life is to work hard and believe in yourself and surely success will come your way. I believe everyone should follow their heart and do what makes you happy. What’s a life even mean if you aren’t content with yourself? “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.” |
