Song Title: Das Wunderschönste Ding
An original song by Liam Hoselton

Liam is a second year Bachelor of International Business student at Carleton University. He is currently studying 4th year level German, with plans to study in the German province of Baden- Württemberg during the 2018-2019 academic year. He is highly active within the local Ottawa music scene, playing in the local alternative-rock band XiL, and working part time as a freelance recording engineer and songwriter. Liam’s most recent musical feat has been the release of his band’s debut EP, “If I Should Live Forever, Then Know That I Am Dead Inside.” which is available now! Other than that, he constantly looks for ways to challenge himself through complicated songwriting practices and pushing the boundary on what he is capable of. For this competition he has written an original song in German called, “Das Wunderschönste Ding” which translates to, “The Most Beautiful Thing.” The song departs entirely from his typical songwriting style, to bring a much calmer and tame folky style song. So sit back, relax, and chill out to some cool tunes, just like Liam is going to do.

Realizing how much she loved to perform and sing, she decided to make it a part of her life. Having spent the past year improving herself as a vocalist, Aki is ready to take the stage and show off a different voice.

Song Title: 駅
 (The Station)
Written by 竹内まりや  Sung by 中森明菜  Album: CRIMSON.  Label: Warner Music Japan Inc. (1986)

My name is Yang Na. I am from China.  I always think that pop music is not borderless, especially when the lyrics is greater than the melody. There are so many boundaries, such as culture, language, age, and so on. People from the different environments may have different tastes in music. But I also believe that there is something in music that is beyond these differences. People are different, but people are the same, because we are all human being. We all have very similar emotions. So, when you hear a song in a language you don’t understand, if you listen carefully, you can feel it. The most important part is not what the singer is trying to express, it is whether you can find yourself from the song, depressed or lonely, happy or sad…

Emily

Singing in: Korean
Song Title: Sorry

By The Rose (더 로즈).  Label: Single; J&Star Entertainment: 2017.

Emily was born in 1999, here in Canada’s capital city, Ottawa. She is a first year Cognitive science student specializing in the stream of language and linguistics. She has a fascination with the way that languages are formed and processed and, as a huge k-pop fan, is currently studying Korean.

Music is a bridge that connects us all. There is so much emotion the is expressed through music without even taking into account the lyrics. Have you ever stopped to wonder why you still get emotional when listening to sad music in a language that you don’t understand? Emily fell in love with k-pop because she felt an emotional connection with the artists without ever meeting them or understanding the lyrics of their music. She loves music and poetry and believes that they are a match made in heaven. Emily believes music is the best way of bringing the entire world together and reaching out to people across the globe. Music has become a core aspect of Emily’s personality and a way of expressing herself.

안녕하세요! 저는 엘리프 다렌데 입니다! (Hello! My name is Elif Darende!) I am in my second year of Linguistics here at Carleton. I especially fell in love with Korean music in the 9th grade, and through it I learned to love the language and the culture as well.

I started studying Korean on my own off and on during high school, and really got into it once I began university. I’ve made many valuable friendships throughout my classes and I am so glad I got the chance to do so.

I can’t wait to see all of the talented acts I’ll have the honour of sharing a stage with, and I wish everyone the best of luck!

Song Title: 我只在乎你I Only Care about You

By Teresa Teng

Euan completed his BHum here at Carleton in 2016, majoring Humanities and Linguistics, along with a minor in Greco-Roman Studies. While this degree was terribly exciting from a research perspective, his love of international studies and of being employed led him to apply to the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs where he is a first-year student in the Conflict stream. He has taken many language courses here at Carleton: Latin, ASL, Mandarin, and most recently Japanese. Were there all the time in the world, he’d probably sign up for Swahili and Inuktitut, but he’s already drowning in coursework as it is. Of all the languages he has worked on, Mandarin is by far the most challenging, but Japanese is the most fun. Taking them at around the same time is especially rewarding, considering the enormous number of loaned words and their major phonotactic differences.

Song Title:
存在
By 汪峰 (Wang Feng)

I’m a first year Computer Science student from Mexico who is very passionate about Music and learning about other cultures. I moved to Canada in 2014 with a decent level of English. This lead me to create friendships with other international students from my high school. At first, I was really intimidated by the Chinese culture as there were many of them and I was the only Mexican. I thought Mandarin was a very annoying language at first, but then this changed. I was marveled by the beauty and complexity of Chinese characters, as well as its efficiency to communicate ideas. This lead me to learn Mandarin at Carleton University.

I’ve been singing since I was 10 years old, from school choirs to professional choirs and vocal ensembles with performances with many professional orchestras and venues such as the National Arts Centre. Throughout my music career I’ve also learned Piano, Guitar, Violin, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, and Bass. My musical skills helped me establish connections with my Chinese friends as we would play songs together with me not knowing much about what the songs where saying, but really enjoying being exposed to the language and the culture.

Katie is a first year student at Carleton taking a Bachelor in Global and International Studies specializing in the environment. She has been described as an easy-going adventurous person whose aggressively passionate about way to many things. She grew up in Toronto where she first fell in love with the Spanish language. Continuing her learning at Carleton has only enhanced her infatuation with Spanish culture and she plans to spend her third-year exchange in South America. Why she is here today is because of her love for music and the stubbornness to try and push past fear and enjoy it. Katie’s family is extremely musical, and it was with them at the family farm singing country songs in the barn that she really learned to love singing.
