XiaoranSinging in: English Xiaoran was born and raised in China. He is a first-year Math student currently taking ESLA1900 L at Carleton. Standing on the stage singing for people is his dream. He has won the first prize in 2018 Chinese super voice in Ottawa in last October. He was always the champion of the singing contests he participated. He can play guitar but just as a beginner. Xiaoran has been exposed to music since his primary school. He likes singing in Chinese, English and Korean and decides to take Korean lesson next semester. Now, he is trying to write his own songs. He believes singing for his audience is the most wonderful thing in the world. |

CamdenSinging in: French Camden is in First Year at Carleton. He’s been playing guitar for a couple of years and has enjoyed music since a very young age. He’s taking a French course at Carleton and plans to continue learning French while at university. His favourite artists among many others are: Chuck Berry, Keith Richards, Angus Young, Nokie Edwards, Bob Bogle, Brian Wilson, Carl Wilson, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison. The song “Je Croyais” is a French cover of Paul McCartney’s “Yesterday” done by Pierre Lalonde. |

GabrielleSinging in: French Gabrielle fell in love with music at a very young age, having been on stage since she could muster even a note. She is a first-year student of Forensic Psychology at Carleton University and is taking a French course to improve her grammar and keep her French abilities on the rise. Having been raised in a Bilingual household (with one parent English and another French) she spoke both languages as a first. After attending an English school, however, she lost most of her French abilities and has been pulling herself back to where she wants to be by taking courses and vacations in French communities. The song she will sing, Les Eschardes by Charlotte Cardin, reminds her of long car rides in the winter because this song is from a lovely album that is a perfect accompaniment for a long, cold drive. She hopes you will enjoy all the talented individuals that will be performing, and wishes you a lovely evening of multilingual entertainment! |

SedefSinging in: French Sedef is a first year student at Carleton University studying Global and International Studies with a specialization in Global Inequalities and Social Change. She was born in Ottawa and is fluent in English and Turkish and has taken French as her third language throughout her elementary and high school years. Currently, she is also taking a French course at Carleton. Singing is Sedef’s passion and since age four she has performed at Ottawa community events, talent shows, competitions and school musicals. She has also taught herself how to play the piano and enjoys playing and singing in the R&B and Soul genres. Singing truly brings out her musical creativity as Sedef also has original songs. |

EmmaSinging in: German My name is Emma, and I am a second year student at Carleton University; taking Global and International Studies specializing in history. Growing up in Ottawa, I would speak predominantly English and took French throughout elementary and high school. Carleton presented the opportunity to learn a wide range of languages, and I was so excited to learn German. Originally planning on spending a semester in Germany, I thought it would be a great language to learn. I also find that German culture is so interesting so getting a chance to get to learn about the culture and language was such a cool opportunity. I wanted to participate in this contest because I love music and singing. So singing in another language presented such a fun challenge that I couldn’t pass it up. I choose the song I want to Hold Your Hand by the Beatles because it’s one of my favourites, is really fun to sing, and I get to put my own spin on it by performing it with the ukulele. |

KevinSinging in: German Kevin is taking second-year German as a Special Student. After attending a math conference in Berlin in 2016, he wanted to be able to read mathematical works in German. In addition to mathematics, Kevin has a fondness for Bach’s choral works and some German operas by various classical composers. After learning a bit of German, he felt that his listening experience took on another dimension. |

AllieSinging in: Japanese My name is Allie (アリー) a third year student at Carleton University. I am a Human Rights and Social Justice student and minoring in Japanese. I adore Japanese culture and language, and I especially love Karaoke! I hope one day to get the chance to live in Japan. From a young age I was introduced to anime by my friends and have been wanting to learn more ever since. I also love animals and have a cat (Mochi) a dog (Yuna) and 7 rats! I do not have a musical background, but I always enjoy an audience at home of my pets and have a lot of fun! She is a third year student in Statistics at Carleton University. She loves watching anime especially Japanese anime since she was a kid. With this interest, she tried to sing Japanese songs just by impression, of course most of lyrics are wrong but she looks happy. I have been a casual fan of anime and manga for some years now, and never thought that my interest in Japan would go any further than that. However, while taking Japanese to fulfill a language requirement last semester, I absolutely fell in love with Japanese culture, traditions, and of course the language as well! ChenSinging in: Korean Hi, My name is Chen and I am a 3rd year student studying Network Technology at Carleton University. When I was younger I was looking for songs to sing and randomly came across a Kpop group called EXO with their cover of Open Arms and from there I was amazed by their vocals. I looked deeper into Korean music as a whole and I realized that it really focuses on vocal strength and emotion as ballads seemed very popular in Korean culture. From then on I was inspired to sing and perform Korean songs. The song I chose I fell in love with instantly when I heard it for the first time and means a lot to me as I’ve listened to this song since middle school. KyteSinging in: Korean Hello! I’m Kyte and I’m a fourth-year Information Technology student. Over my time here at Carleton, I have taken a few different language courses, and the one that I’m currently focusing on is Korean. I listen to all kinds of music from everywhere in the world, and Korean music has a specific style and wide range of genres that I really enjoy, so I’m able to combine my studies of the language with my love of music! One of my biggest passions is learning about new languages and cultures and I have a long list of places that I would love to travel to. I’m even hoping to go to South Korea next year to teach English after I graduate to continue improving my language skills and to learn more about the culture. The song I chose is 누군가 필요해 (I Need Somebody) by the band Day6, which is one of my favourite songs. I had the opportunity to see it performed live, and I hope to be able to convey the message and emotion behind the song the same way that I experienced it! |

I took an interest in Mandarin back when I was in high school where I met one of my close friends who was an international student from China. Other than Mandarin, I also love listening to KPOP and Bollywood songs. I love singing and also have participated in talent shows back in high school. It has been over 6 years since I last sang in front of an audience hence why I am a little nervous but let’s do this. I will be singing “The Moon Represents My Heart” by Teresa Teng. Dimi-TrioSinging in: Spanish Having met in the first term, Mélissa, Gythe and Arno decided to pay one last homage to their former SPAN 2010 professor, naming themselves, Dimi-Trio. In one song, they will bring to you the best of both Spain and Latin America! The Performers Mélissa is a first year Journalism and Humanities student and a lead singer in Dimi-trio. Learning Spanish became a priority to her after discovering that she had long lost relatives that live in Barcelona. Together with her brother, she plans to one day mend ties with her family and visit them in Spain. She picked up singing from her Grandmother, as she recalls: « Every time I would visit, she would always play music from her childhood; we would dance to ‘’Singing in the rain’’ together. This is the main reason why I sing, I have her at spirit and a never ending love for music! » Gythe Gebara, notoriously known as Ganso (i.e. Goose) in SPAN 2010, is a talented Flamenco Guitarist and backup vocalist in Dimi-Trio. He is currently in his third year at Carleton studying History with a minor in Spanish. Gythe is passionate about Spanish culture and music, whether it be their history, music or beautiful language. Gythe has been playing guitar for almost 8 years now and flamenco artists such as Paco De Lucia are some of his biggest influences. His message is as follows: « Thus, I’m most excited to be a part of Linguavision, as it blends two of my favorite things: the Spanish language and music! May the best man/woman win, ¡Gracias amigos! ‘There are things known and there are things unknown, and in between are the doors of perception’ » Arno (Arian) is a lead singer and acoustic guitarist in Dimi-Trio. He is in his final undergraduate year, graduating in Neuroscience with a minor in French. Arno was born in France, however, his family moved back to Iran at an early age before moving to Canada. He is well versed in Persian, English and French, and half fluent in Spanish: the latter two owing to his linguistically extensive formation at Carleton University. Due to similarities of Spanish to French and Persian, Arno’s self-taught Spanish was further developed while partaking in 2 humanitarian missions in Honduras. He plans to someday travel to Spain while visiting some of his relatives in France and Germany. |
