ParisaSinging in: French Hello everyone, My name is Parisa. I’m a second year student at Carleton and my major is Computer Science. I’m going to sing in French in the contest. I have always had a great passion for both the French language and singing and generally any kind of art and performance which allow me to express my inner world. The song I have chosen to sing is “Tombe la neige” by “Salvatore Adamo”. First of all, it’s an old song and I have a special passion for old songs since they carry gold and the dust of history and memories with themselves and they usually are richer in music, lyrics and performance. Secondly, I relate to the song deeply since it always snows in Ottawa and I feel homesick and abandoned here most of the time as an International (Iranian) student from a very different culture and society, so I really like to express this intense feeling in a way and language I really like. There have been lots of days I walked in snow and felt the solitude while a solid white covered everything, all holes in the city and even people’s faces. I really appreciate this opportunity and I will never forget how the whole process has made me happy and the joy it brought that dissolved into the black tar of my sorrow. At last I would like to attach a translation of a piece of poem with the same atmosphere from a prominent Iranian poet, Mehdi Akhavan Sales (M. Omid), and translated by Mohammad Rajabpur “The weather is dismal, the doors are closed, Thank you for your attention and your time. |

HollySinging in: German Holly is a first year International Business student minoring in German language. She was born in Germany and is super excited to be learning German here at Carleton university. She is an avid music lover and loves to sing wherever and whenever she can. She loves Disney movies as well as musicals, which provided her the inspiration for her song choice. Holly will be singing Reise durch die Zeit, which is the German translation of the song Journey to the Past from the animated story Anastasia. The movie was recently turned into a Broadway musical that is currently touring around different areas of the world in different languages including a German language touring production. The story of Anastasia tells the story of a young woman Anya, and her journey in trying to discover who she is and where she came from and if she has a family, as she has no recollection of her past. Holly feels as though this echoes her journey in trying to learn German, after living in German during the early years of her childhood. Holly is super excited to have this opportunity and hopes that you enjoy her performance! |

I have a lot of experience with Korean things, such as working at some Korean restaurants and watching a Korean musical at a theater. the Korean song I will sing is called “Don’t Worry” which is from a classic Korean drama, it reminds me of my memory when I was a little kid. Actually this is not my first time singing on a stage but I still feel nervous because this is my first time singing in another language in public. MasakiSinging in: Korean Masaki is an exchange student from Nagoya, Japan. She has been studying Korean for two years in Japan and at Carleton. Masaki decided to apply for this competition because she wants to do something special before going back to Japan in April. Her motto is, “no music, no life”. In Japan, she goes to karaoke twice a week after school and for her, singing is the best way not only to have fun and release stress, but also to study a foreign language. Masaki will sing the song For The First Time In Forever, a well-known song that everybody knows the rhythm to. In this song, the Korean phase;태어나서 처음으로(Tae-Yow-Na-Seo Cheo-Um-Woo-Roe), which means “for the first time in forever” appears 6 times. Masaki would like the audience to memorize this phrase and sing along with her. Let’s all enjoy singing along together! |

北方故娘 – Girls from the NorthSinging in: Mandarin Chinese Hey, the girl on the left is Sonya also known as 宋雅, this year she is in 3rd year Mandarin. She is a Psychology major with a minor in Mandarin. I met Sonya in our 1st year Mandarin class a year ago. We bonded over our love for Chinese dramas and Chinese food. Outside of Chinese class Sonya is a dancer, she has been dancing Indian classical dance for 10 years, so she has always had an interest in performing. Sonya can also speak some Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Bengali, and French. She loves acquiring knowledge about languages and broadening her horizons through experiencing varying cultures from different parts of the world. This person to the right of me is Makua also known as 余安琪，this year she is also in 3rd year Mandarin. We have been in the same Mandarin classes for the past 2 years. She is a Global International Studies student specializing in law and minoring in Mandarin. Makua is a crazy Chinese drama fanatic, and often I have to catch up with her in watching different shows. She also teaches me many interesting Mandarin phrases from said dramas, some of which aren’t correct. Makua has been to China last summer and had first-hand experience with the culture there. She feels that Chinese culture is very rich, and by participating in this competition wishes to share her experience and love for this language and culture. ZeinabSinging in: Russian Hello everyone (Vsem priviet)! My name is Zeinab, majoring in Applied Linguistics and minoring in Russian. I enjoy learning languages and thrive to explore different ways to express my talents and my knowledge of a language. When I started studying at Carleton, I always wanted to take Russian classes, and so I did! I have completed the first year of 1010 and now I am currently taking 1020. I look forward presenting the song in front of non-native and native speakers of the Russian language, hoping it will bring out the joy and happiness into the air. I will be performing a song in Russian, which was released just before WW2 in 1938 to express the solidarity of the people. It was written by a Russian poet named Mikhail Isakovsky, who worked with his friend Matvey Blanter to make it a success. Both artists decided to call the song after the name Ekaterina “Katherine”, as it was a widely used name during that time. Although, after the following years, interestingly, this song became universal and has been used worldwide in different languages. |

TomasSinging in: Spanish ¡Hola a todos! My name’s Tomas. I’m a fourth-year Carleton Student majoring in music, more specifically, jazz guitar. And now, I’m going to try my luck at singing as well! I’ve been taking Spanish classes as electives and have become infatuated with the language’s beauty, musicality, and the cultures that surround it. The song I’ve chosen to perform, “La Frontera” is a personal favourite of mine written by the criminally underrated Lhasa de Sela. De Sela was a Canadian-based Mexican-American singer-songwriter who composed and sang amazing songs in Spanish, French, and English. In 2010, after releasing only 3 albums, she died much too soon at the age of 37. |
