🎤 Ben
🎶 “Amsterdam – Live, Olympia / 1964” by Jacques Brel; Album: “15 Ans D’Amour”; Barclay (1988).
Hey I’m Ben! I thought I’d put myself out there and sing a song which I’ve loved for years. Being in political science, it’s nice to have an opportunity to do something musical. Cheers!
🎤 Erin
🎶 “Pour Un Instant” by Serge Fiori and Michel Normandeau. Album: Harmonium. Universal Music Canada (1974).
Hello Linguavision 2023! My name is Erin, and I am in my second year of the Public Affairs and Policy Management program. Growing up in a French-speaking community in Manitoba, I have always wanted to learn the language, so I began to learn French at Carleton last semester. I am excited to be singing one of my favourite songs, “Pour Un Instant” by Harmonium, which was later recorded by my favourite Québec singer, Catherine Durand. This song is about living in the moment and appreciating the smaller things in life. This song always makes me smile and I hope, for a moment, it will bring you happiness too. 😊
🎤 Lucksiha
🎶 “Le Festin” By Michael Giacchino; Performed by Camille Dalmais; Pixar talking Pictures and Walt Disney Music Company (2007).
Salut! My name is Lucksiha, and I’m a first-year Public Affairs and Policy Management student. Taking a French course is a requirement for my program, but another reason for my motivation was that I also wanted to go to Québec and order a chocolate croissant. I listen to plenty of French songs, but I will be singing Le Festin since it was from Ratatouille, a movie I wholeheartedly enjoyed as a kid.
🎤 Gabriela
🎶 “Concedimi” by Matteo Romano. Debut single release (2020).
Hi! My name is Gabriela and I’m a second year Criminology and Criminal Justice major with a concentration in Psychology.
From attending a music school in my home city for several years, to singing at every school assembly, and even having the opportunity to sing with the broadway cast of Les Misérables downtown Toronto, you can see that music has been one of my greatest passions for as long as I can remember.
Alongside my love for music, though, is my love for my Italian heritage as it is one of the things in life I am most proud of – With my grandparents speaking Italian to me all my life, and all of my extended family living in Italy, I have chosen to take Italian classes here at Carleton in hopes of eventually being able to speak the language fluently and make my family proud.
I cannot wait to be able to perform in this event, and I can say without a doubt that it is my most exciting challenge yet!
🎤 Italian 1020 A+
🎶 “La mia voce” by Naomi Rivieccio; “Aladdin”; Walt Disney Records (2019).
Ciao tutti! Siamo Italian 1020 A+!
Although we are a diverse group coming from a wide range of disciplines and years of experience, we share a common love for the Italian language. Since we enjoy our language class so much, we thought we would share are little of this love through the connection of music.
Music often has been considered its own language, and languages are how we use our voices to empower each other. So, in combining both the Italian language and the music language, our unique A+ group will unite our voices together to inspire you all to use your voices. Just as you can interpret music differently, our hope is – however you decipher or hear this song – that no one will ever silence you, but that together we can all instead use our voices to light up the world.
🎤 Astreo
🎶 “ABISSALE” by Tananai; Album: Rave, Eclissi; Label: Universal Music Italia (2022).
Astreo is an artist from Ottawa, Ontario, who is finishing up a B.Sc. Biology. They have been singing for a long time, and have wanted to learn Italian for years. Astreo finally took the chance to learn the language this year, and is enjoying exploring Italian culture.
🎤 Mahmoud
🎶 “Hajimete no chuu 「はじめてのチュウ」” by Anshin Papa 「あんしんパパ」; Album: “Kiteretsu Encyclopedia Soundtrack”; Nippon Columbia (1990).
I’m a 4th year student currently studying Computer Sciences with a completed minor in Linguistics at Carleton University. I’ve completed first year Japanese courses here and am hoping to put my skills to the test!
I love creating digital animations. I currently work as an animator at this university’s sports division, Carleton Ravens, as an animator and graphic designer for promotional material.
Thusly I love manga and anime, and I love to watch older anime which lacks English subtitles, which is a big reason why I’d love to learn Japanese.
🎤 Paige
🎶 “ロミオとシンデレラ/ Romeo and Cinderella” by doriko (2009); Sung by Hatsune Miku.
Hello! My name is Paige (they/them), I’m a fourth year student at Carleton in the Linguistics program, and I’m so excited to see Linguavision come back after the Covid hiatus! I absolutely love the Japanese language and I took it for three years at Carleton. I’ve been musical since I was a child, with a background in piano as well as singing, and will always jump at the chance to perform. This year I’m hoping to put on a great show, and end my last semester of university on a high note!
🎤 Diego
🎶 “Hikare Inochi” by Kitri; Album Name: “ Hikare Inochi” Single(2021); Nippon Columbia Co, Ltd./NIPPONOPHONE (2021).
I am originally from El Salvador, been living in Ottawa for 11 years now. I am currently studying Second Year Japanese in intensive after doing the intensive Japanese in fall semester. I mainly watch anime, which is the only exposure I have to the language. I originally decided to learn Japanese because of a coworker that kept on speaking Japanese with me. Because of him, I was motivated to study the language, and due to watching a specific anime that involved the main character communicating through writing, so the anime showed the hiragana and kanji. I also listen and sing anime openings and endings from animes that I have watched on my own.
🎤 Ethan
🎶 “One More Time, One More Chance” by: Masayoshi Yamazaki山 崎まさよし (1997); Album: HOME.
Hi! My name is Ethan, and I am a third-year student at Carleton University. I am a Commerce student focusing on international business. I think this might be a good opportunity for me to improve my Japanese. The song I choose, One More Time, One More Chance is one of my favorite Japanese songs, I first heard it from the movie 5 Centimeters per Second.
🎤 Thrice

🎤 Amethyst
🎶 “예쁘다 (Pretty U)” by SEVENTEEN; Album: “Love & Letter”; Pledis Entertainment (2016).
Hi everyone, we are Amethyst. We met in KORE2010 and bonded over our love of K-pop and the Korean language.
Hi, I’m Haven (left) and I’m a second year journalism student. Whenever I’m not stressing about school, I love dancing and drawing.
Hi, I’m Anastasia (right) a second year music student, and I’m also minoring in Korean! Whenever I’m not reading The Lord of the Rings or drinking bubble tea you can probably find me practicing.
We want to tell you – you’re pretty!
🎤 Alice
🎶 “This Love(이 사랑)” by Davichi; Album: “Descendants Of The Sun Pt.3 (Original Television Soundtrack)”; musicnnewkorea (2016).
Hi! My name is Alice. I am from Taiwan. Now I’m in my third year at Carleton University. I major in Communication and Media Studies and minor in Korean. I love learning different languages and cultures. In high school, I was a big fan of K-drama and K-pop. I taught myself Korean by binge-watching K-dramas. The biggest reason that motivated me to learn Korean back then was, silly to say, I wanted to talk to my favourite Korean actor in Korean. During those years, I formed the habit of learning Korean from K-drama. Although my motivation has changed, I no longer learn Korean for my idol. I still would love to master this language so I can get to know more about Korea and its culture. I am glad that Carleton University and the Korean program allowed me to improve and advance my Korean. I had lots of fun learning Korean over the past three years and would love to share this joy with you through my performance. Enjoy
🎤 Keisha & Viphop
🎶 “Only” by Lee Hi. Album: 4 Only (2021). AOMG.
Hello!
We’re Keisha and Viphop and we are both first-year students. We had an enjoyable experience taking Korean in the fall term and wanted to combine our love of music with our newfound knowledge in Korean. Having both grown up in Southeast Asian households, music was a huge part of our upbringing and largely contributed to our appreciation of music. We have many fond memories of going to karaoke with our friends and screaming our lungs out to love ballads, which was our own form of therapy.
The song we chose to perform is titled “Only” by Lee Hi, which reminds us of the jittery feelings associated with first love. Romance is a beautiful thing to experience and we wanted to convey the feeling of having butterflies in your stomach when you’re around that special someone. This will be our first time performing together so we hope everyone will enjoy our performance as much as we enjoyed preparing for it.
🎤 ALYN
🎶 “Good Day / 좋은날” by IU; Album: “Real”; LOEN Studios (2010).
Lynda (stagename ALYN) is a singer/rapper and songwriter and has been performing online on various platforms in English and Korean for 8 years. She started her journey by making video edits of her favourite anime and kpop groups and then slowly turned to online kpop cover group communities to meet like-minded individuals. ALYN now mainly posts kpop covers on her Youtube channel in between studying at Carleton in the Communications program.
ALYN decided to learn Korean because of how inspired she became when watching kpop groups like EXO, SHINee, and TWICE perform and hopes to be on a big stage like them one day. Improving her craft has been a steep slope, so please support her journey (or else <3) and don’t forget to enjoy!
🎤 Sandy
🎶 “[恋爱画板 (伴奏) (伴奏)]” by [锦零]; Album: [恋爱画板]; Label: Believe Music (on behalf of Hot Cake Studio); UMPG Publishing, LatinAutorPerf, and 1 Music Rights Societies.
Third year in Commerce: Marketing, Minor in Chinese Mandarin
🎤 Kaiya
🎶 “星球坠落/Falling stars“ by 艾热和李佳隆;album:中国新说唱第3 期;中国说唱巅峰对决 (2018).
My name is Kaiya and I’m from Vancouver. I am currently in my second year of criminology and have been taking Chinese as an elective. In high school, I had many friends from China who would often take me to play KTV. From that, I learned how to sing many Chinese songs with them, and I have found interesting in listening and singing Chinese songs, which is why I entered this contest.
🎤 Kai
🎶 “声声慢(shēng shēng màn)” by 崔开潮 (Cui Kai Chao) & 刘洋 (Liu Yang); album: 急驶的马车; label: 网易云音乐 (2017).
My name is Kai and I am a 4th year Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies student, minoring in Korean and Mandarin Chinese. I want to travel all over the world someday, but especially to Taiwan. I have enjoyed watching Chinese and Taiwanese shows for a long time, and listen to Chinese music all the time. I really enjoy singing in many different languages, and have a background in amateur musical theatre, but I have not performed in years. I picked this song because it sounds beautiful, it has very poetic lyrics and it’s a lot of fun to sing!
🎤 Agusta
🎶 “Casa Portuguese” by Amália Rodrigues, performed by Custódio Castelo; Album Name “Famous Fados on Portuguese Guitar” Custódio Castelo (2020).
My name is Agusta and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am a third year student majoring in French, but I took Portuguese classes in 2020 and 2021 here at Carleton as a way of learning more about my culture and history. Growing up we never spoke Portuguese around the house, so having a way to learn the language from almost an outsiders point of view has been indescribable. I’m very privileged to have the opportunity to learn about my culture and language in school, and I don’t take that lightly. I have always been a very musical person, I strongly believe music has a way of communicating across not just people but generations, and cultures. The song I have chosen is by the Queen of Fado, Amália Rodrigues, and is about what it is to live in a Portuguese household. It also happens to be minha mae’s (my mom’s) favourite fado song, I remember hearing her sing it growing up and I wanted to do this for her.

🎤 Ike
🎶 “Спокойная Ночь” By Виктор Цой; Album: Группа крови; Performed by Кино; Label: Gold Castle Records (1988).
всем привет! Ike here, I’m a fourth-year geophysics student with a minor in archeology. Two things I have always had a great passion for are music and language learning, so I was practically born for Linguavision. I love performing and have been in several plays and bands throughout my life but it’s been a few years so I’m excited to be back on stage. In addition to speaking English, French, Dutch and some German and Norweigian, I’ve spent the last while diving into Russian. I have several Russian-speaking friends and connections to the language, but it was during my trip to Ukraine last winter that I fell in love with the language. On my last night in Ukraine, I looked out over the city lights and sleepykhrushchyovkas, and listened to this song, Спокойная Ночь – Peaceful Night – by Kino. I already liked the song before, but in that moment it captured what I saw and felt perfectly, I was experiencing exactly what Viktor Tsoi wrote about. Since then the song has held a special place in my heart. That meaning has only grown over the past year, and I knew it was the song I had to perform.
🎤 Группа
🎶 “Aluminum Cucumbers (Алюминиевые огурцы)” by Kino; Album: 45; Label: AnTrop (1984); Song sung by artist Victor Tsoi along with his band, Kino.
Hello! The six of us are students from multiple disciplines, ranging from computer science, law, international studies, and political science. For most of us, we chose to study because someone close to us inspired us to learn, whether it was a family member or friend. The program has been online for several years, but nonetheless, the small class sizes have meant we’ve been in the weeds together since RUSS 1010. There’s just something about crying over what cases govern which prepositions really brings language students together. After studying together for two years, performing together seemed a natural and fun challenge to add to our studies. Plus, we received a lot of encouragement from our wonderful professor Marina. We chose the song because it reflected our experience studying the language— at times goofy, absurd (what do you mean the number changes the ending of the word?!) and usually a very fun time. The song itself lacks meaning, but one could say it reflects our experience. Sometimes, you can plant a chunk of metal (clueless English speakers) and, by miracle, grow some aluminum cucumbers (clueless English speakers who now know how to order a coffee in Russian.)
🎤 Anna
🎶 “DELIRIO DE GRANDEZA” by Rosalia; Album: Motomami; Label: Columbia Records (2022).
Hi, I’m Anna! I’m a Computer Science major with a hidden background in the arts – I’ve been in many musicals, dances, and song performances. I haven’t performed in a while though, and I miss the feeling of being onstage! I love Spanish music, and my favourite artist is the wonderful Rosalia. With this performance, I hope to capture the spirit of Spanish music and convey the message of her little song “Delirio de Grandeza”, which has always meant a lot to me ever since I first heard it. I draw inspiration from my martial arts studies; this song helped me through the hardships of striving for second-degree black belt. It was tough but worth it!
