The School of Linguistics and Language Studies (SLaLS) offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies (ALDS) and Linguistics (LING), a Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (CTESL), world-class modern language courses, English as a Second Language for Academic Purposes (ESLA), and advanced Communication Courses for the Disciplines and Professions.

Practicum in Speech-Language Pathology

Qualified students in the Psycholinguistics & Communication Differences concentration have the opportunity to take a practicum course that provides clinical experience in speech-language pathology.

Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (CTESL)

The Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (CTESL) can be completed concurrently with an Honours degree or it can be taken as a post-degree certificate.

Graduate Diploma (GDip) in Linguistics

The graduate diploma (GDip) in Linguistics is open to current Master’s and PhD students from disciplines other than linguistics. The program allows students to incorporate the study of linguistics into their primary program.

At this time, the GDip in Linguistics is designed primarily for students pursuing Carleton graduate degrees in Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies, Cognitive Science, Anthropology, French, and English. The program culminates with a Capstone Examination which ensures students have acquired the same level of linguistics knowledge as graduates from the MA.

Course Offerings

Modern Languages

We regularly offer courses in languages such as American Sign Language, Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.

Communication Courses

Communication Courses for Disciplines and Professions (CCDP) and Engineering Complementary Courses (ECMP) are designed to help students from specific disciplines develop communication skills.

Credit ESL (ESLA)

We offer three levels of ESLA courses to improve your academic English in stages. The courses have been developed to target language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) and research and study skills.
