Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (CTESL)
The CTESL program, one of Canada’s oldest and most respected Certificates, provides graduates with the professional qualifications to teach ESL in Canada or abroad, while our Masters in Applied Linguistics & Discourse Studies offers a TESL-focused stream of courses leading to advanced qualifications. This program requires practicum placements with two of our amazing host teachers.
MA Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies TESL Stream (MA ALDS)
ALDS MA students with documented previous experience in teaching English as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL) may follow a sequence of courses in their MA program leading to professional certification as a teacher of English to adults. This program requires practicum placements with two of our amazing host teachers.
MA in Teaching English as an Additional Language (MA TEAL)
The MA TEAL is a graduate program designed specifically for international students who aspire to become English language teachers in international contexts. This program equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to work as professional English teachers in various programs, including general English, English for specific purposes, English for academic purposes, and more.
Teaching English in Global Contexts (TEGC)
We also offer a unique specialization as part of the University’s Bachelor of Global and International Studies. BGInS: Teaching English in Global Contexts provides students with the in-depth knowledge, cross-cultural awareness, and pedagogical skills necessary to teach English internationally.
