Rod Phillips spoke at a sold-out event at the Timken Museum of Art, San Diego, on Sunday, 7 April. His talk, entitled “Wine & the Masters,” focused on the representation of wine in paintings by the Masters (about 1500-1800). He first outlined the wine culture in which the Masters lived and worked, then discussed a number of paintings that represented art in such contexts as religion, celebration, dining, connoisseurship, and morality.
Following the talk, Rod led a wine tasting.
