Senate met for its first meeting of the 19/20 academic year on Sept. 20. Here are the highlights:

Welcome new members

Senate approved and welcomed three new faculty members and two new special academic appointments who will be serving on Senate throughout the 2019/2020 academic year:

Chair’s Remarks

President Bacon welcomed Senators to the new academic year. He provided an overview of summer activities including residence move-in day and student orientation. President Bacon spoke to his goals for the 2019-2020 academic year which can be summarized under three themes: strategy, momentum and reputation. He noted the importance of the Strategic Integrated Plan, Strategic Mandate Agreement, Carleton University Indigenous Strategic Initiatives Committee and the reputation research project. President Bacon also highlighted that enrollment targets for this year have been met, with a total enrolment growth of about 1.1%.

Strategic Integrated Plan

Strategic Integrated Plan (SIP) co-chair Lorraine Dyke, Deputy Provost, Academic Operations and Planning provided a presentation on the SIP process. She noted that the process is tied closely with the SMA planning process and so far has focused on heavy engagement with the community. Dr. Dyke highlighted the SIP speaker series and consultation sessions with the Senate consultation being held on October 18. She highlighted that all information can be found on the SIP website.

President Bacon and Lorraine Dyke provided an update on the Strategic Mandate Agreement and announced that negotiations are expected to begin in November 2019 with finalization in March 2020. Carleton will be meeting with the provincial government twice over the course of the fall as part of the negotiation of this framework. President Bacon noted that this year’s process is shorter and is expected to be simpler than in the last iteration.
