Congratulations to second year History student Daniel Anderson on winning 1st place in the inaugural “Writing Contest for all Students studying the Russian Language”. His essay, “Interview with my Favourite Russian Author”, which featured his imagined conversation with the author Dmitry Glukhovsky was well-received by judges – all leading experts in the Russian language, literature and history from Russia and Canada – and has netted him an all-expenses paid trip to Moscow and St. Petersburg this summer.
“In two years and under 200 hours of class instruction, our Daniel was able to reach a significantly higher than expected proficiency level, which allowed him to take his language learning outside the classroom by participating in the Russian essay writing competition, and become its first-place winner. To say the least, I am very proud of this achievement of my student,” says Daniel’s Russian instructor, Dr. Marina Sabanadze.
The contest, a cooperative effort between Carleton and the Russia-Canada Business Council, has a wide reach inviting students studying Russian in schools, universities, language schools, and Russian learning centers across Canada to participate by writing an essay in Russian of up to 2,000 words on one of a number of proposed topics.
