Caitlin Bergin, a PhD candidate in Linguistics, Language Documentation, and Revitalization, was featured in the Toronto news last month! Bergin is currently working on a sociolinguistic research project which seeks to answer the question “how do Torontonians pronounce ‘Toronto’?” by utilizing a survey designed to i) determine which pronunciation(s) Torontonians perceive to indicate in-group membership, ii) determine which pronunciation(s) Torontonians perceive to indicate out-group membership, and iii) determine if social factors (e.g., age, gender, residence) influence participant pronunciations of “Toronto.” Bergins research caught the attention of several media outlets and was featured on BlogTO, CityNews, Global News Radio, the Daily Hive, and the Roz and Mocha show.
