In her final year as an undergraduate student in the School of Linguistics and Language Studies, Delaney completed a placement for the Practicum in Speech-Language Pathology course, where she shadowed speech-language pathologists across two schools in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and had the opportunity to design and lead lessons in a Language Learning Disability classroom.

Delaney also completed an honours thesis and shared her research on children’s babbling and first words at the annual honours thesis conference.

Learn more about what Delaney has been up to and what’s in store next, and find some words of advice for students in SLaLS below.

What Delaney Has Been Up To

Delaney jumped back into school after graduating from Carleton, and is currently completing a Master of Clinical Science in Speech-Language Pathology program at Western University in London, Ontario.

What’s Next?

“I will be spending the next year finishing up my graduate degree in London,” Delaney shares. Post-graduation, Delaney hopes to travel.

“I am looking forward to returning back to the Ottawa area to start offering speech-language pathology services in my community.”

Words of Advice for SLaLS Students

“Trust yourself and be good to yourself,” Delaney advises. “Take time to reflect and learn from the good, the not-so-good, and everything in between.”

“Do difficult things! Send the email. Ask the question. Get out of your comfort zone. Challenge yourself to do hard things! Building relationships and getting involved will help you get so much more out of your degree, and it will help set you up for the future. I often reflect back on my time at Carleton – the relationships I built and extra opportunities I engaged in played a huge role in getting me to where I am today.”

“Being a university student can be stressful. Take time away from your books and spend it in a way that fills your bucket! The fuller your bucket, the better of a student you can be.”
