Eva Kartchava and Mike Murphy Each Awarded Future Learning Innovation Fellowship

Congratulations to Professors Eva Kartchava and Mike Murphy, recipients of the Future Learning Innovation Fellowship from Teaching and Learning Services (TLS).

This Fellowship provides funding and support for instructors to explore innovative technologies that address teaching and learning challenges.

“The recipients of this year’s fellowship are focused on integrating immersive technology, such as digital storytelling, mixed reality, simulations and 360-degree video, into their courses to address teaching and learning challenges, and enhance student engagement and academic success.”

Kartchava’s project will combine the effects of VR and AI in designing corrective feedback (CF) scenarios and contexts for teacher-trainees to experiment with by engaging in different scenarios and variables to decide whether to provide CF, when, and how. This simulation is likely to allow for increased engagement with the topic of CF, illustrate the challenges in practice, and promote critical assessment of one’s effectiveness with CF. The project will involve both ALDS students and in-service practitioners working in the Ottawa area.

Murphy will invite students to create a digital memoir that shares their experience with the places, cultures, and languages they have inhabited. This digital memoir project aims to raise engagement and learning by granting students greater ownership of the texts they create. It takes students beyond monomodal writing tasks on low-relevance topics to building their English and digital communication skills via meaningful storytelling. Students will have the option of creating a video or developing a locative mobile experience. In both options, students can use a mix of text, voice, music, photos, maps, videoclips, and animations to bring to life significant sites of their lived experience.
