Applied Linguistics & Discourse Studies (M.A. and Ph.D.)
The interdisciplinary combination of Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies is Carleton’s unique approach to the study of language, bringing together several research areas that have previously had separate academic traditions.
Master of Arts (MA) in Applied Linguistics & Discourse Studies
Our MA program emphasizes the central role that language plays in educational, workplace, community and other social contexts. Collaborative Specializations in African Studies and Digital Humanities are available.
Master of Arts (MA) in Applied Linguistics & Discourse Studies (TESL Stream)
Students in the MA program with documented previous experience in teaching English as second or foreign language may follow a sequence of courses leading to professional certification as a teacher of English to adults.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Applied Linguistics & Discourse Studies
The innovative combination of Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies offers our doctoral students distinctive research areas and gives them a range of exciting professional opportunities upon graduation.
Linguistics (G.Dip., M.A., and Ph.D.)
Our Linguistics programs are research-oriented, offering a variety of research-intensive courses (independent study, tutorial, honours thesis) and opportunities for research assistantships.
Graduate Diploma (GDip) in Linguistics
The Graduate Diploma (GDip) in Linguistics is a graduate minor for current Carleton graduate students in other fields who are doing language-related work.
Master of Arts (MA) in Linguistics
Our MA in Linguistics exposes students to the core foundations of the field while providing opportunities for interdisciplinary research.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Linguistics
Our PhD is a flexible and individualized program allowing students to explore many areas of the field, including theoretical, experimental, and documentary linguistics.
Teaching English as an Additional Language (M.A.)
The MA in Teaching English as an Additional Language (MA TEAL) is a graduate program designed specifically for international students who aspire to become English language teachers in international contexts.
Master of Arts (MA) in Teaching English as an Additional Language
This program equips students with the knowledge and skills to work as professional English teachers in various programs, including general English, English for specific purposes, English for academic purposes, and more.
Capstone Project
The MA in Teaching English as an Additional Language (TEAL) Capstone Project provides students with an opportunity to work on a TEAL-related topic of interest to them, and apply the skills and competencies acquired during their time in the program.
