“Plain Language for Professional Development”
3-4:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 14

This session will offer plain language strategies to improve participants’ writing skills. The session will highlight why reading ease is important. Also, it will help writers generate sensible, short, smooth and clear text. Participants will gain a more nuanced understanding of communication and professional writing strategies. Participants are encouraged to bring their laptop or notebook computers.

Professor John Kelly (Journalism, Carleton University) will facilitate the workshop.

“Meaningful Communication for Professional Development”
2-3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21

This session will explore techniques to improve participants’ meaningful communication skills. Instead of using jargon, buzz words or specialized language to obscure meaning, participants will develop a toolkit for contributing valuable and comprehensible work to their fields. The session will introduce participants to strategies and hands-on activities that can be used at the outlining, drafting, and copy-editing stages of the writing process to ensure that the finished result is meaningful. Participants will gain a more nuanced understanding of communication and professional writing strategies while strengthening their classroom and workplace communication skills.

Mason Hanharan (Policy & Program Administration Consultant, Delsys Research Group) and Janna Klostermann (International TA Mentor, Carleton University) will facilitate the workshop.
