ESP to Degree

Below are the guidelines for students transferring from ESP to a degree program. Please note that students with previous university experience (including returning ESP students) will have different admissions requirements than what is indicated here. These students should consult with an ESP Academic Advisor for details.

Students Starting ESP in the Fall Term

ESP Arts and Social Sciences Stream

ESP’s Arts and Social Sciences Stream can help you to qualify for a variety of Carleton’s programs. Students
in the ESP Arts & Social Science Stream enroll in a First-Year Seminar (FYSM 1900) course and two electives
of their choosing each semester.

Bachelor of Cognitive Science

A minimum average of C+ (6.0) across 3.0 credits in the ESP.

Bachelor of Communication & Media Studies

A minimum average of C+ (6.0) across 3.0 credits in the ESP.

Bachelor of Economics

A minimum average of C+ (6.0) across 3.0 credits in the ESP, and grade 12 Advanced Functions (MHF4U).

Bachelor of Global & International Studies

A minimum average of C+ (6.0) across 3.0 credits in the ESP.

Bachelor of Media Production and Design

A minimum average of C+ (6.0) across 3.0 credits in the ESP, and one grade 12 university level math credit
with a minimum 70% (MDM4U, MHF4U or MCV4U). BMPD is a limited enrolment program, and meeting the
minimum requirement does not guarantee admission.

Bachelor of Music

A minimum average of C+ (6.0) across 3.0 credits in the ESP will satisfy the academic requirement.
Candidates must also audition and be selected by the program.

ESP Business Stream

Students in the ESP Business Stream enroll in a first-year Math course (MATH 1009), first-year Economics
(ECON 1001/ECON 1002), Introduction to Business (BUSI 1800) and a First-Year Seminar (FYSM 1900)
course.
To earn admission to a Bachelor of Commerce, Bachelor of International Business or Bachelor of Accounting, students must:

ESP Computer Science Stream

Students in the ESP Computer Science Stream enroll in first-year Math courses
(MATH 1007/1104), first-year Computer Science courses (COMP1005/1006) and a
First-Year Seminar (FYSM 1900) course.
To earn admission to a Computer Science, Cybersecurity, or Data Science, students must:

ESP Engineering Stream

Students in the ESP Engineering stream enroll in first-year Math (MATH 1004/1104) and first-year Chemistry
(CHEM 1001/1002) as well as a First-Year Seminar course. Students must successfully complete the ESP
Engineering Stream with:

ESP Science Stream

Students in the ESP Science Stream enroll in a First-Year Seminar (FYSM 1900) course, first-year Math
courses (MATH 1007/1107), first-year Chemistry (CHEM 1001) in the fall and choose between CHEM 1002 or
NEUR 1203 in the winter.

Students interested in a B.Math should enroll in a First-Year Seminar (FYSM 1900) course, first-year Math
courses (MATH 1007/1107), and additional credit to be chosen in consultation with an ESP advisor.

Other Programs

To qualify for other programs through ESP, such as Architecture, Industrial Design, Information
Technology, Humanities, Journalism, Public Affairs & Policy Management, and Social Work

Students starting ESP in the Winter Term

ESP Arts & Social Science Stream

Students who begin ESP in January can earn up to 1.5 credits (3 half-credit courses and two non-credit
workshops).
Normally, ESP students, unless they qualify as a mature student (see below), must complete at least 2.0
credits
before being considered for admission to a degree program. This means that you will be continuing
ESP in the subsequent summer, fall or fall/winter terms before you can be considered for admission to a degree
program.

Degree requirements

Students who meet the criteria above are eligible for admission to most of Carleton’s Bachelor of Arts
Programs. Please note that some B.A. programs may require completion of high school prerequisite subjects
(BA Biology, B. Economics).

Mature Students

Mature students may qualify for admission to a B.A. program after having completed a minimum of 1.0 credit
with at least a C- or better standing in the first attempt (i.e. your first university credit(s)), provided they meet
the university’s formal definition of “Mature” applicants; that is they:
