Professor Rod Phillips was interviewed on CFRA News Talk Radio (Ottawa) on the alcohol sales policies recently announced by the Ontario Government. As of 2026, convenience stores and all grocery stores will be able to sell beer and wine, thus reducing the market dominance of the LCBO and The Beer Store. Rod discussed the history of state retailing of alcohol in Ontario from the creation of the LCBO and The Beer Store in 1927, and its origins in the temperance and prohibition movements of the nineteenth century and the imperatives of the First World War.
Rod Phillips teaches a course, The Social History of Alcohol, at Carleton.
