CANDEV Data Challenge

February 4, 2022 — February 7, 2022

Hello,

The CANDEV Data Challenge team is proud to announce our first ever Virtual event occurring from Friday February 4  to Monday February 7, 2022! The intent of this communication is to invite you to help us advertise the event within your student network.

This will be the 3rd CANDEV Data Challenge hosted by Statistics Canada in collaboration with other federal government departments, with our past two events having taken place in October 2018 and January 2020 hosted by the University of Ottawa.

The Data Challenge will provide students over the age of 18 and registered at any Canadian post-secondary institution with the opportunity to solve an existing business problem related to data science within the Government of Canada. The competition is not limited to any field of specialization, and we invite any student with the willingness to learn more about data analysis and programming to participate.

Students who participate will be placed into teams of 4 and will have 48-hours to develop a prototype solution to their assigned data challenge. Each challenge is developed by one of our partnering departments and can be solved using identified public datasets and open source tools. Teams will be provided coaching through mentors, and will have opportunities to attend a number of programming workshops throughout the event. Students who complete the challenge by submitting a solution are eligible to apply to a targeted federal government recruitment pool for various positions.

At this time, we are reaching out to post-secondary institutes across Canada with whom partnership with Statistics Canada is already established. We encourage you to promote the event throughout your establishment, with a focus on Data Science, Economics, Statistics, and Computer Science departments. We also invite you to share information regarding the CANDEV Data Challenge with institutes within your networks. Shortly, each school will receive an information package with communications to be sent out to student networks advertising the event.

Should you have any questions or concerns in advance of our next reach out, please contact the CANDEV general mailbox or visit our website.

Thank you.
