Although FYC can match any student with an upper year mentor, we offer specialized streams of First Year Connections to ensure that every student feels as supported as possible in their transition to University. Click on a partner stream below to learn more.

Any incoming first year student participating in FYC will be matched with an upper year student in a similar academic program.
Specialty Streams

The African, Caribbean, and Black Student stream focuses on supporting students who are part of these communities. The mentors in this program are dedicated to supporting Afro-Caribbean, and Black students as they transition to post-secondary education.

The First Generation Student stream focuses on supporting students who are the first in their family to attend university. Mentors are First Generation students themselves and can speak from first hand experience to the unique transitions that come with being a First Generation student.

The Transfer Student stream focuses on helping students who have recently transferred to Carleton University during their first 6 weeks here. The mentors in this program are upper year students who also transferred to Carleton from another institution. The transition to university as a Transfer Student comes with additional challenges, and our mentors in this stream are here to help guide you along the way to being a successful Carleton student.
Academic FYC Streams

The Faculty of Engineering & Design FYC stream is open to any student in a general engineering program. This stream focuses on supporting engineering students through their first year by matching them with an upper year student in the same engineering program.

The Sprott FYC stream focuses on helping new business students overcome challenges and uncertainties that they may face in their first weeks at university. Sprott mentors are exceptional upper year students who have excelled in academics and co-curricular activities and are well on their way in becoming young professionals. They support our new students in achieving the same level of success that they have.
