What is the SOAR Student Leadership Conference?

This is an opportunity to develop and enhance personal philosophy of leadership that includes understanding oneself, others and the community. It focuses on the evolution of delegates into even better leaders. This event which is tailored to both experienced and novice leaders is aimed to challenge delegates into opening their minds to new notions about how leadership should be.  This year’s SOAR Conference will be hosted virtually.

Why should I attend this conference?

The SOAR Student Leadership Conference is a great opportunity to build leadership skills, as well as network with other leaders within Carleton and professionals in the Ottawa community. The skills developed at this conference will also carry forward in future careers and can be added to your Co-Curricular Record.

When is the SOAR Conference?

SOAR 2021 will take place on January 30, 2021 from 9:00am – 1:00pm.

Who is involved with the SOAR planning?

The SOAR Student Leadership Conference would not be possible without the dedication of its many sponsors!

A team of dedicated students from the Student Experience Office also support the ongoing development of the conference.

What should I bring with me?

This year the SOAR conference will be held virtually. Attendees are not required to have any materials, however a note pad and pen is recommended to write down your thoughts or key messages.  We recommend that all participants ensure they have a strong internet connection and a computer with microphone and camera for the interactive portions.

What types of workshops will be held?

There will be a variety of different themes included in each workshop including personal skill development areas, exploring leadership development and one’s philosophy on leadership, as well as discussing the best practices to get involved and take advantage of Carleton’s activities throughout the year. How much does the Conference cost?

How can I volunteer at SOAR 2021?

Applications to volunteer at SOAR are now closed. If you have any questions, please contact us at leadership@carleton.ca

What platforms will be used for SOAR 2021?

The opening ceremonies and keynote address will be hosted on Zoom, while all education sessions and workshops throughout the day will take place on Microsoft Teams. Once registered, you will receive a schedule with links to access each session throughout the day.

How can I access Microsoft Teams for the conference?

All Carleton staff and students have access to the full Microsoft Office Suite. Using your Office 365 account, download the MS Teams app on your desktop. Make sure you have access to stable, high-speed internet as well as a microphone and webcam for the interactive portions of each session.

What if I cannot attend all SOAR sessions?

If you have any special accommodations requests, please advise us on the registration form or email leadership@carleton.ca and someone will address your situation in a timely fashion.
