I love the I-CUREUS program! It has allowed me to conduct research on the field that I love the most: Genetics.
With the help of Dr. Owen Rowland, I am researching how plants behave when certain genes are missing. The understanding of how these genes affect the development of plants can offer new possibilities to improve current plant strains. One of our current prospective is to create an oilseed crop, similar to Canola, which can survive in cold weather, as is found in many parts of Canada. Other possible applications are to develop plant strain for the mass production of biofuels and even jet fuel.
So far my experience in the lab has been amazing, I have learned how to PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), which is basically “gene photocopying”. I learned how to genetically modify plants, and the strong safety precautions taken to prevent any possible escape of modified strains. I also learned how to communicate to peers and supervisors in a research environment, which is crucial for any research position.
To any student considering to apply for the I-CUREUS program I strongly suggest you do. It is an incredible experience in which you will learn many practical skills instead of just theory.
