Walking by the Multimedia Lab that is often used for its large screen or for assemblies of mid-sized groups.
Today instead I saw a few students in small group clusters, some at a table, some gathered informally around on a couch, and some sitting and even laying on the floor. Welcome to the Theatre Production Workshop run by Sarah McVie of Carleton’s English department.
These students were simply lolling about. They were playing with purpose, working on their projects. This class was the fourth year workshop, following from previous workshops in 1st, 2nd and 3rd year where students learn first how to act, progressing to fourth year where they learn about directing and staging a play. And in fact, Sarah crosses over the years of study, having these fourth year students collaborate with the students in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd year workshops to produce a show. Even more, Sarah collaborates with Professor Yvan Cazaban in Architecture whose students in his Theatre Design Workshop prepare the staging of the show.
These faculty members have themselves collaborated to create a wonderful interdisciplinary experiential learning experience. The Discovery Centre is proud to provide the classroom space to support these innovative teachers.

And, everyone is invited to come see the show on April 4 in the Carleton University Media Studio.
