The “Spotlight on AI” series features speakers from across Carleton’s teaching community talking about the innovative ways that they are responding the challenges posed by generative artificial intelligence (Gen AI). These faculty-led sessions are meant to be informal spaces where colleagues can share and discuss ideas with each other.
While significant attention has been devoted to finding ways to discourage students from excessively relying on, or even using, the generative capabilities of ChatGPT, we might be more productively engaged in encouraging students to explore its specialized or assistive applications. In this workshop, Dr. Ellen Cray (Sprott School of Business) will share her experiences with introducing a group of Chinese MBA students, all of whom were English as an Additional Language (EAL) users, to an English-only program. The underlying idea was that ChatGPT could offer students strategies to enhance their comprehension of course materials (e.g., textbooks, papers, and reports) through its translation or simplification capabilities, as well as through its explanation and clarification functions. Additionally, ChatGPT was presented as a tool to assist in producing various academic requirements, including essays, exams, and presentations. The objective was for students to recognize how ChatGPT can act as a competent and intelligent assistant integrated into their learning, one whose support requires careful monitoring and critical evaluation.
