Kim Hellemans
Kim Hellemans has had a profound and successful career while at Carleton University. Most recently, she was awarded a 2020 OCUFA Teaching Award, the highest honour that a university educator can receive in Ontario. Also in 2020, Kim was recognized with an Award of Excellence from the Minsiter of College and Universities for her work ensuring her students had learning and mental health supports during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2014 she won a Provost’s Fellowship in Teaching Award for her dedication to her students and her mentoring capabilities. She received scores of recommendation letters from colleagues, as well as current and former students. They all agreed on one thing: Kim cares.
The words of one of her students encapsulates both Kim’s passion and talent for teaching; the student remarked that “she never fail[ed] to make me feel like an individual student instead of just a student number.”
In addition to the provost’s fellowship award, Kim won a 2010 Capital Educators’ Award, an honour that recognizes excellence in teaching and those who are positive role models for their students. One year later, she was also the recipient of the 2011 New Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award.
