These questions will not be evaluated. They are a tool to help Rachelle see how you all understand and respond to the FTL Guide and to help you to engage more actively with the reading.

Team Meetings

What are some benefits we want facilitators to receive from team meetings? Which of these benefits do you feel least confident providing, and why? What information, resources, or support would help?

In your experience as a facilitator/FTL, what have been the main shortcomings of team meetings? What concrete steps can you take to reduce these in your team this year?

Your first couple of team meetings are an important time to set the tone (friendly but productive) and expectations (clear deadlines and quality of work) for the semester to come. What specifically will you say/do to get this off to a strong start?

Reviewing Workshop Plans

When you’ve received feedback on your workshop plans, what did you find most and least helpful (1-2 of each)? Consider content, style/format, and anything else that matters to you.

“What to Look for in a Workshop Plan” lists many items to consider. Identify a few of these that you consider important but may have neglected (as a facilitator/FTL). How might paying more attention to these improve the workshops and student learning?

Many FTLs find that tracking and enforcing their team members’ submission/revision deadlines is a challenge. How do you feel about your ability in this area? What steps will you take to make this part of the job easier and less stressful for yourself and your team?

Workshop Observations

How would you characterize your experience of having your workshops observed by an FTL? For example, how did you feel, did you do anything differently in observed workshops, how did students respond, etc.? How did your experience being observed change over time? What lessons do you want to remember as you start your year as an FTL?

The FTL Guide spells out the observation procedure, including preparing, observing, and debriefing. What are 2-3 parts of this procedure that you have concerns or questions about? What would you like to work on this year to make your observations as helpful as possible?

Difficult FTL Situations

What do you think of the advice on Fierce Conversations? Can you imagine yourself holding a “fierce conversation” with someone on your team? Choose or invent a situation you’ve encountered before and write a script for the Confrontation Model.

Do you recognize yourself in the sections on Common Negative Reactions or Things to Avoid? How might you be able to handle these situations better after reading this material? What supports or resources would help?

Difficult Scenarios

FTL Survival Guide

The Survival Guide contains tips from many former FTLs. For each major section (Admin & Planning, Wellness, Team Meeting Preparation, Workshop Plan Feedback, and the miscellaneous tips in the table at the end), identify 1 favourite tip and 1 tip you think wouldn’t work for you. Briefly explain your choices.
