Graduate Scholarships

Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs on the recommendation of the Chair of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering or the Chair of Electronics to an outstanding engineering student entering a Masters degree in Sustainable Energy. Endowed in 2015 by Janet and Leo Lefebvre.

Awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs, on the recommendation of the Chair the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering to an outstanding graduate student entering or continuing in a degree program within the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Preference will be for a student from India. Established in 2016 by Vishnu Mehrotra

Awarded annually, when merited, to an outstanding full-time graduate student proceeding to the third year, or in exceptional cases, proceeding to the second year, of a Ph.D. program in either Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering. The recipient must have demonstrated excellence in research with potentially significant impact on engineering practice. The recipient will be selected by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research on the recommendation of the Chair and Associate Chair of Graduate Studies of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

This scholarship is possible through the generosity of J.Y. and E.W. Wong. Dr. J.Y. Wong received his Ph.D. from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England in 1967 and joined the Faculty of Engineering at Carleton University in 1968. In 1986, the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne awarded him the degree of D.Sc. in recognition of his research achievements. He has been a fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering. He has been presented with numerous awards including the prestigious George Stephenson Prize of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, England. Dr. Wong retired from the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University in 1999 and became Professor Emeritus and Distinguished Research Professor.

Awarded annually to one or more graduate students in either the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering or Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, aspiring to a career based on the peaceful and environmentally respectful applications of these disciplines.

The scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Design.

This scholarship was endowed in 1998 in honour and memory of Dr. Gabriel David Warshaw. Dr. Warshaw received his Master of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at Carleton University and was active in the Canadian and international space programs as a partner of Routes, Inc., Ottawa, until his untimely passing in 1998.

Gabriel and his wife were graduates of Carleton. Our department shares this bursary when a suitable research project is available to be awarded. The Department will recommend to the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, students suitable for consideration of this bursary.

The R.D. Richmond Bursary in Aerospace Engineering is awarded annually by the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, on the recommendation of the Chair of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, to outstanding and deserving graduate students in the Aerospace Engineering program. The purpose of this bursary is to assist with the costs of travel and accommodation for research or conference trips related to their studies.

The first presentation of this award was made in Winter 2008 and was valued at $1,800 Canadian dollars.

This bursary was endowed in 2006 through the generosity of Robert Dick Richmond, a pioneer of Canadian Aerospace. During the Second World War, he worked in the Mechanical Engineering Division of the National Research Council where he was employed as a junior engineer working on wind tunnel and flight test projects. Later during the war he joined Fairchild Aircraft Ltd. where he subsequently became Chief of Aerodynamics for the Husky, a utility aircraft.

Each year, the Chair of M&AE Department will recommend to the Dean of Graduate Studies and Research, students for this bursary.
