Roy retired as an Associate Professor in the School of Social Work at Carleton University in 2020. He is known for his disability activism throughout Canada. Roy is a member of the Social Policy Committee, Council of Canadians with Disabilities and he was a founding member of both the Persons with Disabilities Caucus of the Canadian Association for Social Work Education and the Canadian Disability Studies Association. His research interests include disability histories, social construction of disability, disability and immigration policy, disability rights and violence toward people with disabilities.
