“Train Wrecks”: Carleton’s Award-Winning Faculty Explore Creating Learning from Colossal Failures

June 19, 2023 at 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Location:481 MacOdrum Library
Cost:Free

As the Old Latin saying goes, “Errare humanum est”. However, when we share our experiences with a teaching community, we tend to focus on effective strategies and successes. But even the most renowned educators acknowledged for excellence in teaching have faced many obstacles, including “colossal failures” (Strean, Brooks & Maher, 2019).

In this live, in-person panel, Carleton’s award-winning faculty will share stories about a time when they tried a new approach and it didn’t go as planned, but through reflection, the experience ultimately made them better teachers and more open to helping students learn from their mistakes.  The panelists include:

  • Adrian Chan (3M National Teaching Fellow), Department of Systems and Computer Engineering
  • Sarah Todd (3M National Teaching Fellow), School of Social Work
  • Robert Burk (3M National Teaching Fellow), Department of Chemistry
  • Jesse Stewart (D2L Innovation Award in Teaching and Learning), Department of Music

This panel is based on the publication by Strean, W. B., Brooks, K., & Maher, P. T. (2019). Train wrecks: 3M National teaching fellows explore creating learning and generative responses from colossal failures.
