New this Fall, SLaLS offers an undergraduate course in corpus linguistics, ALDS 3701. This course, taught by Guillaume Gentil, will give students the opportunity to use specialized corpus-analysis software to design and build their own corpora. Computer-assisted corpus analysis is a growing field within Applied Linguistics, especially among those researchers exploring issues of language description, discourse analysis, and technical writing. And the tools and techniques students will learn in this course, the same as those used by dictionary makers, language educators, translators, and other language specialists, will encourage them to appreciate the power and usefulness of computers to uncover, quantify, and exploit the patterns of language.
