Dr. Ruth Kircher spoke to us Tuesday from The Netherlands. Her lecture explored questions of how and why parents choose raise their children multilingually, focusing on the Quebec context. The nuanced circumstance of French and English in the province was examined as was the influence of numerous heritage languages. The first study explored the situation for multilingual families in urban Montreal. The second reached out to select families across the province. The lecture was well-received by an audience drawn mainly from universities across Canada with others joining from the EU, UK, US, and the Middle East. Several parents raising bilingual children were also in attendance.
