Summer 2023
This page lists course delivery information for many of the courses offered by the School. The objective of the page is to give students an idea of whether a course section is offered in-person or online and when online, how much time they are expected to be online during the course’s scheduled timeslot. It is intended to assist students in selecting a course that best matches their needs/preferences. More comprehensive details will be made available by instructors on the first day of classes.
Please Note: Some courses may be offered in-person on campus, online, or a combination of the two. For a definition of the different Course Delivery Types, please see the Registrar’s Office website or search a course and click on ‘Section Type’ in the ‘Section Information’ listing in the Public Class Schedule in Carleton Central.
Note: We expect to offer mainly in-person courses this summer. Some however will be available only as an online course (see below). The following information is subject to change as instructors are assigned to courses. Please check Carleton Central and this website for updates to the delivery status.

Delivery of Summer sections of CCDP 2100:
In-person (on campus): CCDP 2100 section B (CRN 20837)
ONLINE: Synchronous: Except for the in-person section B, all other sections will be online.
Students will be expected to attend classes at scheduled time (duration may vary weekly) with cameras turned on and functioning microphones. Class participation is expected.
- ESLA

- ESLA Placement (required prior to registration)
- Maximum permitted course load (course loads may have further restrictions and may change at the end of the term if you are currently in an ESLA course)
- See the section on Studying with an ESLR for information about how to register
- ESLA courses have MANDATORY attendance (online presence required throughout the entire term)
- ESLA 1300: Will not be offered in Summer 2023 but will return in the Fall 2023 term
Delivery of ESLA sections:
ONLINE Combined Synchronous/Asynchronous
- Live components are offered during the scheduled time. Webcam use is expected. No course conflicts are permitted.
Students will be expected to attend classes at scheduled time (duration may vary weekly) with cameras turned on and functioning microphones (online sections). Class participation is expected.
- For ESLA courses please note that Webcam/computer camera is REQUIRED to be ON during the course’s online classes. The following is the policy approved by the Dean’s Office (see your course outline for more information):
Students are required to use their Webcam/computer camera during online synchronous language classes. Students may lose participation points if they refuse to turn their camera on while classes are not recorded (some exceptions apply). Exceptions:

- Infrequent – technical or health issues (which may be communicated to the instructor in a private chat message at the beginning of the class)
- Permanent – personal reasons, when prior consent is obtained from the instructor at the beginning of the course
- Modern Languages

- MANDATORY attendance (online/in-person presence required throughout the entire term).
- Online sections will have live components offered during scheduled time. Webcam use expected.
- No course conflicts are permitted.

- Students taking their FIRST Carleton language course must receive a placement PRIOR to registration
- Students registered in/completed a course are permitted to register in the next course level

Students taking the language for the FIRST time at Carleton:
- Complete the MANDATORY Language Background Questionnaire and placement test
- REGISTER in the course level you have been placed into
- ATTEND and PARTICIPATE

- If registered in a 1010 course (0.5 credit/one term), it is the first of two, first year level courses. The next course level is 1020 followed by either the 2010 or 2110 course.
- If registered in 1110 course (1.0 credit/one term), it is equivalent to taking both the 1010 and 1020 courses in one term. The next course level is 2010 or 2110.
Delivery of the SUMMER sections of Modern Language courses vary:
- The majority of courses will be delivered IN-PERSON (students attend classes on campus) with only some courses being offered ONLINE.
- ONLINE delivery courses:
- Either Synchronous or Combined: Synchronous/Asynchronous
- Languages in table below are listed in alphabetical order
