Ancient China’s Imperial Examination system, 600-1900AD

The National Capital Confucius Institute at Carleton University is hosting a comprehensive workshop entitled Ancient China’s Imperial Examination system, 600-1900AD. This is part of the Confucius Institute’s Engaging China Workshop Series.

China is a regular topic in university international studies and business programs. The Chinese public service system and state-owned-enterprises (SOEs) are often seen as the principal counterparts to deal with when doing business in China. It is widely believed that China’s Imperial Examination System is the origin of the modern public servant selection system. As a matter of fact, China’s 1300-year history of Imperial Examinations functioned mainly for political selection. The Assistant Director of the Confucius Institute, Dr. Weiqun Lu, a professor at Central China Normal University’s Political Science Academy, will offer you his insights on this topic.

The speaker is an expert on China’s political selection and the co-founder of China’s Selective Democracy Theory. He has published a monograph on political selection, State, Examination, People in 2006, and he has a new book on political selection in China that will be published in 2013. He has also published dozens of papers in this field. He supervises PhD candidates and MA students at CCNU’s Political Science Academy. Professor Lu will teach CHIN 4380, Topics in Chinese Culture and Society, at Carleton University in Winter term, 2013.

The workshop is open to all faculty members, students and public.

RSVP: Due to restricted seating capacity, the workshop will be limited to 50 participants. Please email confucius@carleton.ca for registration.
