“Axiomatization of segmental grammar” Artemij Keidan (Sapienza University)
The presentation advocates for a formalized approach to grammar based on the notions of axiomatic theory (in our case, called the abstract grammar) and its model (a specific language grammar). The axiomatization of linguistics addresses the problem of truth evaluation in linguistics: why do we prefer a certain grammar over another? how do we tell the difference between two grammars? More in general, how do we know that a certain statement is true within a certain linguistic theory? Specific instances of axiomatized segmental grammars of Russian, Italian and Old Slavic will be used as case studies.
The Carleton Linguistics Reading group meets in PA246 on Thursdays 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. in the fall of 2023. To subscribe to the mailing list, send an email to “join-culing@lists.carleton.ca“.
