Most online students (especially those who are successful) will tell you it takes focus and motivation to stay on top of their assignments in comparison to traditional classroom offerings. In fact, the ubiquity and flexibility of online learning in some situations can make it easier for students to procrastinate or become disengaged with the learning material.

For faculty teaching in online and blended classrooms, it is import to create a sense of community among their geographically dispersed students. Many online instructors have found that brief (7-10 minute) screencasts have helped students feel more connected.
