Supported Educational Technology
We support instructors with selecting, implementing and using a number of educational technology tools. These tools can be used to encourage engagement, enrich the classroom experience and provide students with additional support and resources.
Using the suite of fully supported tools provides numerous benefits including: technological and pedagogical support from Teaching and Learning Services, a high level of integration with the Learning Management System, and confidence that the technology has passed security and privacy requirements. Use of all educational technology tools is governed by Carleton’s Acceptable Use of IT and Email Policy.

Additional Supported Educational Technology
Aside from fully supported tools, Carleton has a significant number of educational technologies that are fully integrated into the Learning Management System (LMS) and have passed the required privacy and security checks. While TLS may not be able to provide technical support for these tools, we are always available to support the pedagogical uses of educational technologies. Intentional Technology
Technology alone does not ensure the facilitation of learner engagement with your course; the use of the technology needs to be intentional and grounded in sound pedagogical concepts and practices. Here are some of the ways you can consider the educational technology you use in a more Intentional and directed manner.

Educational technology tools support experiential learning by providing immersive, hands-on experiences that can simulate real-world scenarios. Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR), for example, allows students to explore environments and conduct experiments that would be impossible or impractical in a traditional classroom. Carleton’s Experiential Learning Hub provides the technology and software to integrate simulations and interactive software with classes, replicating complex processes and systems and giving learners the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings and develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Educational Technology Tools can help streamline the creation, distribution, and application of rubrics, enhancing transparency and consistency in assessment. Carleton’s learning Management System, Brightspace, enables educators to design detailed, customizable rubrics that clearly outline criteria and performance standards. The LMS also allows for efficient grading and feedback, as instructors can quickly assess student work against the rubric and use integrated Educational Technology Tools to provide targeted, constructive comments.

Game-based learning is supported by Educational Technology Tools like Wooclap through the development and deployment of interactive and engaging learning experiences. Educational games and gamified platforms incorporate elements such as points, levels, and rewards, to motivate students and make learning enjoyable. These results can easily be integrated with the Brightspace gradebook. Game-based learning fosters a dynamic and interactive educational environment, promoting active learning and the enhanced retention of information through play and competition.

Educational technology facilitates group work and peer feedback by providing collaborative platforms and tools that enhance communication and coordination. Tools such as Brightspace discussion boards, collaborative documents, virtual meeting spaces and the Brightspace Peer Feedback Tool allows students to work together in real time, regardless of physical location. These technologies support asynchronous and synchronous collaboration, making it easier for students to share ideas, track progress, and provide constructive feedback to peers. Additionally, the Peer Feedback Tool integrated into Brightspace enables structured and anonymous feedback processes, promoting reflective learning and mutual support.
