Aviva Freedman

Aviva Freedman is recognized throughout Carleton University and the Ottawa community as a superb teacher; her teaching evaluation scores are consistently among the best in the university.

In 1985, her teaching excellence was recognized with the Arts Faculty Teaching Award. One year later, in 1996, both Aviva’s teaching excellence and leadership were recognized when she was named Teaching and Learning Scholar in the Teaching and Learning Resource Centre. Later, in 1997, Aviva was the recipient of the prestigious 3M National Teaching Fellowship.

She is praised by undergraduate and graduate students for bringing abstract subjects to life and for her extraordinary ability to guide and coach students through academic thinking and writing. A brilliant lecturer, a virtuoso user of questions, and a powerful listener who gives students space to discover their own ideas, Aviva is a bastion of pedagogical mastery within the entire Carleton community.
