The Certificate in Teaching Assistant Skills (CTAS) is a program designed to recognize and encourage pedagogical training, as well as to improve the confidence and skills of teaching assistants at Carleton. With Carleton’s move to the new LMS system, Brightspace, Teaching and Learning Services has updated CTAS and some of the components have changed.*
While participating in CTAS, you are encouraged to seek out TLS-credited training sessions that are most meaningful to you, both for your current TA assignments and for your long-term development goals. The program requires that you reflect on your training and use it to inform the production of a short contribution to the scholarship of teaching and learning or engage in an experiential learning opportunity.
There are no deadlines for completing the certificate, but the average length to finish is two years. Once all components have been submitted and reviewed by TLS (including a PASS grade) you will receive the certificate. If you would like to be enrolled in the certificate or have questions, please emaill TASupport@cunet.carleton.ca.
PLEASE NOTE: CTAS is open to current TAs only
Further details available once enrolled.
Program Requirements
To earn the certificate, participants are expected to complete the following:
- 6 or 8 TLS Credits (2 mandatory and 4 – 6 electives). Credit total depends on which final project chosen.
- Reflection Paper

*PLEASE NOTE: TAs who were enrolled in the old version of the certificate that was located in cuLearn have the option of finishing the old version or being transferred to the new version in Brightspace.
