Reporting formally to the Associate Dean, but under daily supervision of the Program Director, BGInS, the BGInS International Experience Manager is responsible for managing the international experience component of the BGInS degree. The Manager develops policies and procedures to ensure that a full range of international experience options are available to BGInS students. The Manager oversees the implementation of these policies, thereby ensuring that all BGInS Honours students have the opportunity to satisfy their international experience requirement in a safe and timely fashion. The Manager identifies potential domestic and overseas partners for the international experience requirement and negotiates Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) on behalf of the BGInS program with them. The Manager develops and maintains strong relationships with partners both on and off campus, including the International Student Services Office (ISSO), Co-op and Career Services and the Student Experience Office (SEO) on campus, and with government departments and other partner organizations off campus. The Manager creates and maintains information resources for BGInS students on the full range of options available to them for satisfying the international experience requirement, ensures that this information is conveyed to them in a timely and appropriate fashion, and advises them on these matters. The Manager monitors and evaluates the international experience programs in the BGInS degree to ensure that they are meeting the needs of BGInS students and satisfying the Learning Objectives of the degree.
The BGInS degree currently includes six different options from which students may choose in order to satisfy the international experience requirement. One of these options, international exchange, is managed through ISSO. The Manager liaises with ISSO on policies and procedures regarding international exchange programs for BGInS students, identifies potential new overseas university partners for exchange agreements for BGInS students and participates in negotiations with these universities, and liaises with ISSO regarding the implementation of exchange programs for BGInS students. A second option, international placement, is managed jointly between BGInS and Co-op and Career Services. The Manager liaises with Co-op and Career Services on policies and procedures regarding international placements for BGInS students, identifies potential new overseas partners for international placements for BGInS students, organizes pre-departure orientation and post-return debriefing for BGInS students going on international placement, and liaises with Co-op and Career Services regarding the implementation of international placements for BGInS students. A third option, experiential learning abroad, is managed jointly between BGInS and Student Experience Office (SEO). The Manager liaises with SEO on policies and procedures regarding experiential learning abroad and oversees the implementation of the academic component of this option. With regards to the other three current options, the Manager is responsible for all aspects of the option, including establishing appropriate policies and procedures, identifying potential overseas partners and negotiating memorandum of understanding’s with them, and overseeing the implementation of the option. The Manager is also responsible for identifying potential additional international experience options for inclusion in the BGInS degree and for developing proposed policies and procedures for these new options to be considered by the BGInS Management Committee.
