Livia Bizik will be presenting a lecture on Moving beyond Gross Domestic Product: Global Efforts and National Approaches in Ethiopia, Indonesia, Trinidad and Tobago.

The use of Gross Domestic Product as a conventional economic indicator for measuring and guiding national development policies has generated mounting concern because it fails to capture long-term impacts on wealth and sustainability. For this reason, in 2024 world leaders have been called upon by the UN Secretary General at the Summit of the Future to devise practical indicators that complement GDP.
This presentation will summarize current approaches to move beyond GDP and presents an application of one of the potential approaches suggested: Comprehensive Wealth or Inclusive Wealth. In collaboration with three universities in Ethiopia, Indonesia and Trinidad and Tobago respectively, this lecture will provide an overview of the application of Comprehensive Wealth using national data from statistical offices, identify trends and implications for national policy. Application of Comprehensive Wealth measures and tools revealed insights into development progress in these areas and suggested how alternative measures could be integrated into strategic planning to better track policy impacts. Finally, boarder integration of Comprehensive Wealth or Inclusive wealth into international agreements such as the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement could improve the uptake of alternative approaches to GDP by countries and assist countries in their efforts to meet global commitments.
