As a journalist, Michael Petrou has reported from across the Middle East, Central Asia, Africa and Europe. He’s won three National Magazine Awards. His 2012 book, Is This Your First War? Travels Through the Post-9/11 Islamic World, won the Ottawa Book Award for non-fiction.

Abstract: Eight years after teenaged boys in the Syrian city of Daraa sparked a revolution in that country by spray-painting, “It’s your turn, Doctor Bahsar al-Assad,” on the wall of their school, it’s clear that it wasn’t the Syrian president’s turn after all. Unlike his dictator colleague’s elsewhere in the region, he’s weathered the protests and won the civil war that grew out of the uprising against him. This public talk will try to explain what that might mean, for Syria, the Middle East, and the world.
