Carleton University’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is delighted to welcome Dr. Mohammad Biglarbegian as its newest faculty member.  Dr. Biglarbegian joins the department as an Associate Professor, bringing with him knowledge and experience in mechatronics systems, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

Dr. Mohammad Biglarbegian

Dr. Biglarbegian earned his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Tehran, Iran.  He then came to Canada where he obtained his Master of Applied Science degree at the University of Toronto, and then his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo.  Prior to joining Carleton University, Mohammad served as an Associate Professor at the School of Engineering, University of Guelph, from 2011 to 2023.

Dr. Biglarbegian’s research interests focus on modelling, design, and control of mechatronics systems, including autonomous robotics and vehicles, applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning in modelling and control, particularly for mechatronics systems.

As a licensed Professional Engineer of Ontario (P.Eng.) and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Dr. Biglarbegian, along with his dedicated team, has undertaken research in the realm of design, modelling, and the development of novel algorithms for advanced mechatronics systems.  His primary focus lies in the creation of novel control strategies specifically designed for autonomous systems, encompassing both robots and vehicles.  His research holds particular significance in applications such as autonomous robots, autonomous cars, and automated agriculture.  Recently, Mohammad’s endeavours have been centered around the utilization of data-driven approaches and machine learning based algorithms to enhance the capabilities of mechatronics systems.  In his capacity as an Associate Professor, Dr. Biglarbegian also serves as a supervisor for several graduate and undergraduate students in his research laboratory.

Dr. Mohammad Biglarbegian’s research has garnered support from numerous agencies and industrial partners, establishing successful collaborations on both national and international scales.  His exceptional work has earned him multiple prestigious scholarships and awards, solidifying his reputation as a distinguished researcher.  Notably, Mohammad was honored with the University of Guelph Research Excellence Award in 2018.

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering is proud to welcome Dr. Mohammad Biglarbegian to its faculty, where his expertise will foster innovation and contribute to the department’s ongoing commitment to excellence and academic growth.  Dr. Biglarbegian will be instructing courses in Controls, Mechatronics, Robotics, and Autonomous Systems, among others.
