The focus of Dr. Speirs’ research is the understanding of the biomechanics of disease processes in the musculoskeletal system, with a particular focus on cartilage and osteoarthritis. His PhD examined changes in the subchondral bone and cartilage associated with hip impingement, and assessed the influence of these changes on cartilage tissue pressure and stresses. Dr. Speirs is currently developing methods to model cartilage in dynamic simulations to study joint incongruity and associated arthritis. Dr. Speirs is also studying quantitative MRI techniques for the measurement of cartilage composition and mechanical integrity, as well as the possible role of ultrasound in diagnosing hip impingement.
