Senate met on November 29 and Howard Nemiroff served as Acting Clerk of Senate in the Clerk’s absence. Highlights from the meeting include:
CUISIC Calls to Action Presented
Senate was pleased to receive the Carleton University Indigenous Strategic Initiatives Committee (CUISIC) Calls to Action and to offer a motion of thanks to all committee members. As this process moves into implementation, any action under the purview of Senate will in due course be brought back to Senate for approval.
Strategic Integrated Plan Update
An update on the Carleton Strategic Integrate Plan (SIP) process was presented by task force co-chair Patrice Smith. She provided a summary of the activity timeline, including over 40 consultation sessions, and presented the preliminary strategic directions that are emerging from the process. Senators emphasized the need to leverage this new plan to enhance Carleton’s visibility and reputation.
SMA-3 Update
President Bacon and Jerry Tomberlin, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) provided an update on the third Strategic Mandate Agreement (SMA-3) negotiations with the provincial government, which are occurring in parallel with the Strategic Integrated Plan process. Carleton met with government representatives in early November and discussions were productive. Negotiations will unfold in the new year and the process is expected to be concluded by the end of March 2020.
Coordinated Accessibility Strategy Presentation
The draft Carleton University Coordinated Accessibility Strategy was presented to Senate by Prof. Adrian Chan, in anticipation of being finalized in the new year. The purpose of this strategy is to further enhance Carleton’s culture of accessibility and be a catalyst for creating a more accessible and inclusive society.
Chair’s Remarks
President Bacon provided an update on recent activities and highlights, including the awarding of 1,300 Carleton degrees at fall Convocation, Carleton’s recent Gold Level certification in Mental Health at Work, the establishment of Carleton’s Chair in Teaching Innovation, Carleton’s outstanding recent Re$earch Infosource ranking and the launch of the TVO Indigenous Hub at Carleton University.
Program Cyclical Reviews Approved
Senate approved the final assessment reports and executive summaries arising from the cyclical reviews for the following undergraduate and graduate programs: African Studies, Applied Linguistics and Discourse Studies, Cognitive Science, as well as Neuroscience and Mental Health.
Membership Ratification
Senate ratified the appointment of Julia Sinclair-Palm as the elected member of Senate from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, with effect from Nov. 29, 2019, for a three-year term.
