Senate met on October 21, 2022. Here are the highlights:
Over 1,200 Carleton Degrees Approved
Senate approved the graduation of 764 undergraduate students and 507 graduate students. Carleton congratulates each of its deserving graduates and looks forward to celebrating their achievements, in person, at this year’s Fall Convocation on November 12, 2022.
Senate Awards 59 Medals & Prizes
Senate approved 59 medals and prizes for outstanding academic achievement. These included 15 graduate medals and 44 undergraduate medals.
New Engineering Program Approved
Senate approved the new Master of Engineering in Engineering Practice program as presented. The program will be in effect following Quality Council approval, which is estimated to be in Fall 2023.
Offered through the Faculty of Engineering and Design, the program has been created with the goal of elevating BEng graduates from recognized engineering institutions around the world towards accelerating their employability and integration into Canada’s workforce.
Strategic Plan for Community Engagement
Senate received the final draft of Carleton’s inaugural Strategic Plan for Community Engagement (SP4CE) along with a presentation by Deputy Provost Catherine Khordoc.
The presentation outlined that as part of the planned roll-out, the task force will be forming a university-wide advisory group strengthened by community representation to govern SP4CE. Working groups will be instrumental in implementing university-wide and Centre-led activities to address the priorities of the plan in the short-term and longer view.
The plan will be officially launched on October 28, 2022 and all Senators were invited.
Quality Assurance & Cyclical Reviews
Senate approved the Final Assessment Reports and Executive Summaries arising from the Cyclical Reviews of:
- Undergraduate and Graduate Programs in English
- Joint Graduate Programs in Chemistry
- Undergraduate programs in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Architectural Conservation and Sustainability Engineering
- Undergraduate programs in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering
Senator Spotlight: Christine Laurendeau
Dr. Christine Laurendeau is an Instructor III and Associate Director (Recruitment and Outreach) at Carleton’s School of Computer Science. Dr. Laurendeau specializes in teaching first and second-year computer programming courses, with a focus on software engineering. Learn more about Dr. Laurendeau

The next Senate meeting is scheduled for November 25 at 2PM. The associated meeting materials and draft minutes will be posted on the Senate website a week before the meeting.
