Carl G. Widstrand

Carl G. Widstrand, Professor Emeritus, Carleton University, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 9:00 a.m. ceremony on Saturday, June 12, “in recognition of an outstanding career as a musician, classical scholar, anthropologist, linguist, and archaeologist.”

Dr. Carl Widstrand has had an important influence on development studies around the world. Educated in Sweden, he is an expert in African studies and was the Director of the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies at the University of Uppsala from 1962-1984. He has taught in East Africa, Tanzania, and Canada, including Carleton University’s Norman Paterson School of International Affairs.

As a consultant, he has worked with many international organizations in policy development including the World Health Organization, the World Bank, and the United Nations. Dr. Widstrand is the author of 17 books and more than 100 papers and has also composed compositions for two string quartets.
