Joseph S. Nye Jr.

Joseph S. Nye Jr., Dean, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, at the 4:00 p.m. ceremony on Friday, June 1 1, “in recognition of a distinguished career of public service in the Government of the United States of America.”
A graduate of Princeton, Oxford, and Harvard, Dr. Nye is renowned for his scholarship in the area of international affairs, politics, and policy, and is the author of Soft Power: The Means to Success in World Politics (2004) and an edited volume For the People: Can We Fix Public Service (2003) as well as countless articles in professional journals and major international newspapers including the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Washington Post. In addition to teaching at Harvard, he has taught for brief periods in Geneva, London, and at the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs at Carleton University as a visiting Fulbright Scholar.
While working in the Carter and Clinton administrations, he worked on a range of international security issues focusing on arms control and disarmament including the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. He is the recipient of a multitude of awards, including top American governmental honours such as the Department of State Distinguished Honor Award, and the Intelligence Community Distinguished Service Medal. Dr. Nye’s commentary has been featured on such television programs as Larry King Live, and the PBS News Hour with Jim Lehrer.
